The work of mechanical design has a sequence of answers somewhere in its conditions. But it is quite difficult to find it.

I'd like to briefly note an article that I read that resonated with me and a possible way of designing and thinking about ours from that article.

A machine cannot be designed if nothing is set in stone.

Out of the blue, here is a quote from an article that caught my attention today.

Citation:From within the WIC - I can't design if nothing is set in stone.

For me, (mechanical) design was like a jigsaw puzzle. There is a fixed point, and you use that as a starting point to fill in the shapes around it.

As this article shows, the design of the machine is clear where it is fixed and where it is not, butHow we clear the places where the design and specifications have not been determined is a very difficult task.It can be.

For example, when I ask a newcomer to come up with a concept for something, he or she draws something out in CAD once he or she gets it.Once the picture is done, it looks like it, so the non-designers involved are very satisfied, but as they become more skilled, they no longer think that "the model is done = the design is in progress".I think.

Conversely, it is our job to create a fixed part.

We are designers. We have to make a lot of decisions in order to give shape to our imagination, so there are things that have not yet been specified, and it is our job to make those decisions. We need to be aware of the fact that we are the ones who have to do the work.

One reason for the lack of handholding is the difficulty in prioritizing.

I am very sympathetic to this part as well. Because in my case, I believe that "there is a right answer to the design method," and in the machine/jig that I design, I believe that the answer lies in the order of design for that item. It is difficult to determine the order of priority to consider.

Somewhere there is an order of how to answer the question in that condition. But it is quite difficult to find it.
This is one of the interesting aspects of design, though,It is impossible to really design when nothing is decided, so one of our jobs is to find a direction, even if we lose some.I'm not sure. I am also wondering if this is the case.

That's it.
