I recently accepted a request to create patent drawings. The first delivery was successful, but the somewhat unique task of creating patent drawings was a good stimulus for me.

I didn't really understand the deeper aspects of patents to begin with, but I was told by the client that they had 3D model data, so I decided to accept the order.Originally by,Patent drawings are special images that seem to use a 3D model, but have 2D elements that are difficult to express in 3D, as well as a hand-drawn feel. I had a

In my usual work as a mechanical designer, I make, edit, and draw many models, so I was apprehensive, but I thought I would give it a try first.(The pressure was tremendous. ・・・・ sweat)

So, today, I would like to share with you my experience in patent drawingand other things I have learned, researched, and figured out.Notes on the entrance area regarding drawing preparation I will leave the

I don't know if this will help you, but I've written down the main points that may be of interest to those who are new to the keyword "patent drawings", so please take a look.

About Patent Drawings

First of all, I would like to make a brief note of the drawings that are required for the patent.

Patent drawings in briefDrawings that enable easy understanding of the invention I have created two versions, one for specifications and the other for designs. The outline of the two is as follows

  • for statement of particulars
A statement of rights that clearly discloses the contents of the invention to third parties and clarifies the technical scope to be claimed as a patent right.
⇒ Detailed drawings consistent with what will be written in the specifications (I wrote cross sections, partial details, etc.)
  • for design
Protection of shapes and images ⇒ Drawings showing shapes (I wrote for 6 sides of the overview)

It goes like this.

Patent drawings have drawing rules.

Now, I will make a note on the drawing related to the patent, but there are some drawing rules, so let's see what the rules are first.

For the drawing of patent drawings, the following

  • In principle, write according to the drafting method (JIS B 0001:2019)
  • Black, not colorable
  • Parallel diagonal lines are drawn on the cut surfaces, and cut surfaces representing dissimilar cut surfaces are oriented (if this is not possible, the spacing of the parallel lines is changed)
  • When drawing a cut plane in one figure in another figure, a single dotted line indicates the location of the cut plane, a sign is added to both ends of the single dotted line, and an arrow indicates the direction in which the cut plane should be drawn.
  • Use a cross-sectional or oblique view to show the uneven areas, and draw a solid line of about 0.2 mm, especially when shading is necessary.
  • The center line is not drawn if not specifically needed.
  • 0.4 mm for solid lines, 0.2 mm for leader lines and dotted and stranded lines.
  • Draw and attach a retractable line using Arabic numerals (approximately 5 mm square in size) that can be clearly distinguished from other lines.
  • When the same part is in two or more figures, the same symbol is used.

These contents may sound like "what the heck" to those who have never written mechanical drawings,For us designers, this is a very normal drawing rule, and we feel no particular discomfort.

Therefore,Patent drawings are fine with JIS-compliant mechanical drafting methods. Yes. I'm not familiar with drafting methods. If you want to see the drafting method in a book, I recommend this book, which I also have. (Standard drafting method based on JIS

Also,The size of the drawing must be within 170 mm (width) and 255 mm (height), which is exactly the size that fits on A4 size paper. It is. Even though the drafting laws are to be followed, mechanical drawings are the same, and while observing the minimum rules, a little editing may be acceptable if the complexity of the drawing increases. If a drawing is difficult to understand, it is not a drawing at all.

How can I try to write my own patent drawings?

Next, let's touch on the question of whether you can write your own drawings, what you should do if you try to write your own patent drawings, and what problems you may encounter if you draw them yourself.

Can I draw it myself?

ConclusionYou can draw your own.

What if I try to draw it myself?

If you try to draw it yourself, though, you will need drawing software,Preparation for this drawing is a major barrier It is likely that this will be the case.I use a 3DC called SolidWorks in my daily life.I used AD,Patent drawing specialists make full use of various 2DCAD, 3DCAD, Adobe Illustrator, etc. to draw It seems to be doing so.

What kind of problems would I have if I painted it myself?

I mean "make full use of software."When a first-time patent drawing artist hits the software wall, the next wall is hit by the drawing skills needed to represent the drawing within the drawing.

The drawing skill barrier is the ability to express a "sectional view" or a "partial detail" that matches the specifics.

For example, I received a 3D CAD model and converted it into a drawing. I also manually erased tangent lines.

In other words, even if there is original data to be drawn, it is not a simple matter,If you can't handle drawing software, you're likely to get stuck because you can't express what you want to express. It is.Furthermore, although there may be variations depending on the content of the patent, at least five to eight A4 pages of detailed expressions and appearance, etc., and six sides of design drawings will be required.

What if I cannot draw my own patent drawings?

If you are unable to draw the patent drawings yourself, you can probably solve the problem by hiring a place that can draw the patent drawings for you.

I have researched and found a company that specializes in patent drawings, so if you have 2DCAD data or 3DCAD data, they will convert it to patent drawings without any problem. It will cost more, but should be fine without the data. It is.

I believe that the area in which these companies specialize is in their ability to revise and respond to customers' needs. Not only patent drawings, but drawings are a means of communicating to others, so there is no point in having drawings that are difficult to communicate.

The same is true of mechanical drawings,Patent drawings are also faster in workmanship and speed of completion through the accumulation of know-how. I think.

The cost of patent drawing preparation, as in the world of mechanical design, may be higher than one might expect from someone who has never done any drawing preparation.

A drawing is simple when it is completed, but there is a lot of detailed work to bring it to that point, as I mentioned earlier. Also, the drawing is not the end of the process, as there is also the inspection process.

This article is not sponsored by any company, so I cannot name a specific company, but I believe that all of the firms I have researched have the know-how and techniques to draw a plan that meets the client's needs.

Finally.

I am grateful for the new learning experience that I have gained from this request for patent drawings. In the sense that we can use CAD data effectively and edit models and drawings, this may be one of the new fields we can do as freelancers, jobs that make use of our skills! I felt that it was a good idea.

We hope to continue to take on this kind of work in the future.

That's it.
